日本の「灯台の父」とされているブラントン（Richard Henry Brunton）は、明治政府のお雇い外国人の第1号で、日本各地に26基の灯台を建設したほかに、日本初の電信線敷設、日本初の鉄橋建設、日本初の西洋式庭園建設、日本初の鉄道（東京横浜間）設計など、大活躍したスコットランド生まれの英国人である。「Building Japan 1868-1876」という題名は、ブラントンが亡くなった後に、出版社が付けたものだが、彼の活躍を見れば大袈裟ともいえないであろう。
